It’s the Season to Scream for Ice Cream

As the weather starts to heat up in the Keystone State, the traditional dessert of choice during the humid heat has to be ice cream. We grew up with it, there are songs about it, but which ice cream shop in Pennsylvania is truly the best? We’ve put together a list of recommended stops all over the state that may be worth checking out in the summer months. 

Erie County 

Krasa’s Kove

20 mins from downtown Erie (and just across the state line), this nationally recognized ice cream shop was placed third in the White Ribbon at the North American Ice Cream Association Convention. For those chocolate lovers, the flavor is named Holy Chocolate.

Dauphin County 

3B Ice Cream 

3B Ice Cream, which has three locations in Dauphin County, has some of the best ice cream, sundaes, and milkshakes around. The homemade blueberry sundae is a perfect treat to combat the summer heat.

Franklin County

The Igloo

This hidden gem has been a family tradition for over 65 years, serving soft scoop ice cream made fresh daily on-site. There are also milkshakes, sundaes, and their special “lollipops” which combine the perfect balance of shaved ice, ice cream with any choice of flavor.

Lancaster Sweet Shoppe

This downtown Lancaster location serves everything from ice cream, milkshakes, and more, but don’t forget to try the Stroopie Sandwich, which consists of your favorite ice cream flavor sandwiched between two homemade Stroopwafels.

The Inside Scoop

Home of the Volcano, the largest sundae in Pennsylvania, but honestly, it might be the biggest in the United States because this masterpiece includes over 12 scoops of ice cream with 8 different toppings. This ice cream shop operates with a line out the door for a reason.

Malacari’s Ice Cream 

Malacari’s Ice Cream started off as a dream in 2010 by two 18-year-old twins as a fun summer passion with one location and eight employees. Since then, the company has expanded to six locations with over 80 employees.

Philadelphia County 

Weckerly’s

Jen Weckerle, the Pastry Chef, created Weckerly’s Ice Cream in 2012. Weckerly’s began in the back of a West Philadelphia neighborhood café and has developed relationships with local farmers and purveyors in order to better understand their ingredients and how to create recipes that best reflect them.

Handel’s

Despite the fact that the menu has over 50 different flavors, the chocolate raspberry truffle is a must when visiting Handel’s. The richest and creamiest ice cream chain in Pittsburgh.
